Santa Barbara International Film Festival plans screening of "Posse"

Quentin Tarantino, Oscar-winner and recent recipient of the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, will host a conversation with Douglas following a special screening of the film "Posse" during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The 1975 film, which stars Douglas alongside Bruce Dern, Bo Hopkins, James Stacy and David Canary (AMC's Adam Chandler), had a strong influence on Tarantino’s filmmaking career. It follows the story of a U.S. Marshal who organizes a posse to chase down an infamous bank robber, only to have the tables turned when the criminal holds him ransom.

The screening takes place on February 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the Lobero Theatre, followed by the question-and-answer session with Tarantino and Douglas. More information about the film festival, including ticket details, is available at www.sbfilmfestival.org.

Bad Reviews for “When In Rome”

Judging by the critics, Josh Duhamel's (AMC's Ex- Leo) new romantic comedy "When in Rome" is a terrible movie. And not just in a prejudiced-against-the-genre way. No. We’re talking about a deeply unfunny, insulting-in-its-ineptness, can-I-have-my-money-back, Razzie-worthy level of bad. If you plan to see "When in Rome" this weekend, you should read a few reviews to see what you’re getting into.

"As for the principals? Well, Bell, glowingly photographed by cinematographer John Bailey, is easy on the eyes. Duhamel resembles a third-string John Krasinski and has the timing of a broken watch. There is also a practical problem that the filmmakers fail to solve. Duhamel is more than a foot taller than Bell and neither director Mark Steven Johnson nor Bailey can figure out how to effectively get them in the same shot, fatal for a movie romance."
[Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer]

"If watching yet another comely couple zip through the Eternal City on a Vespa sounds mildly fun, be forewarned: ‘When in Rome’ doesn’t even offer that. Instead, we get three acts of labored slapstick wrung from an eye-roller of a premise: Type A museum curator Beth (Kristen Bell) is besieged by creepy suitors (including Danny DeVito and Will Arnett) when she plucks their wishing coins from an enchanted fountain."
[Adam Markovitz, EW]

"January isn’t even over and already we have a strong contender for the worst movie of the year. The atrocious romantic comedy “When in Rome” plumbs new depths for ineptitude in acting, directing, writing and every other department…Even by the extremely low standards of the genre, “When in Rome” gets failing marks for chemistry, credibility and even coherence."
[Lou Lumenick, New York Post]

"When in Rome, which has been sitting on the shelf approximately since the first stone was laid down for the Coliseum, is a tiresome time-waster, a film that expects us to believe that beauties like Bell…can’t get boys, that getting married to some dude you sat next to on a transatlantic flight after two weeks is the best of all possible worlds, that you shouldn’t love your job as much as you love guys. And then it doesn’t even offer you any good jokes to laugh at, only Josh Duhamel walking into poles."
[Connie Ogle, Miami Herald]

More on Eva LaRue's Real Life Drama

Eva LaRue (AMC's Ex- Maria) is in a bit of a spat with the City of Glendale and some neighbors over a wooden gate at the front of her home that was built without proper permits. Eva had been cited by the city for violating several codes and ordered to remove the gate, but a zoning administrator later allowed the gate to stay. That apparently didn't go over too well with neighbors, and the latter decision was shot down. La Rue appealed, arguing that the gate was put in to protect her and her eight-year-old daughter from an alleged stalker. The council is deadlocked over what to do about it at the moment, but the opponents say the law is the law... and everyone needs to follow it.
Here's a video of Eva in court Jan 19th.

Spoilers for the week of Feb 1st 2010

Everyone learns about Erica and Ryan this week! Not only does Erica announce their involvement to the press but Greenlee sees them together. And she is irate! She almost kicks the door down so she can claw Erica's eyes out right then and there, but David stops her.

Once Greens calms down, she decides that revenge is the best way to get even. Yup folks, the bitch is back. Yay! With David's help, she manages to destroy something else Erica holds near and dear: Fusion. And you won't believe the revenge plot she cooks up for Ryan, David certainly doesn't. Seriously, it's the stuff February Sweeps are made of!

Once Fusion's computers are destroyed (thanks to Greenlee), all eyes are on David. Ryan is intent on bringing David down and even breaks into Wildwind where Greenlee is hiding out. One thing is for sure: Sparks definitely fly this week. Hmm ... Meanwhile, Ryan isn't David's only problem: The Martin brothers discover medical supplies and know that David is hiding a secret patient. Will they find Greenlee? Well, we'll tell you this: someone DOES spot Greenlee by week's end.

Adam finds Damon in Colby's bed. Colby let's Adam believe that there is something going on between her and Damon and Adam being the protective father he is, He orders Damon to leave. Colby believes Damon's innocent of the robberies around town and is willing to go pretty far to prove it. Liza's not happy about that either.. Who'd have thunk that Adam and Liza would find common ground on something?

Oh, and did we mention that Scott and Annie team up again this week? Well, they do. And this time it's with Adam's blessing!

NOTE: Monday Feb 1st will mark AMC's true final days in NY. Wen. Feb 3rd. AMC will be in shown in HD & in LA... Look for changes in Pine Valley homes!

Agnes Nixon on cancellation of ATWT & GL "They could have been saved!"

In Los Angeles recently to celebrate the 40th anniversary of All My Children, creator Agnes Nixon — aka the 82-year-old queen of daytime television — talked about her show’s controversial move to the west coast, the future of her other soap One Life to Live, and whether CBS made a mistake in canceling two of its daytime dramas.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: If you had to single out one crowning achievement in those 40 years, what would it be?

AGNES NIXON: All the socially relevant stuff, like the storyline about AIDS. The lesbian and gay story. Because of my having grown up in Nashville, Tenn., a very segregated city, being able to have integrated the show was to me the most important thing.

EW.com: Have you had a chance to look at the new studio in Los Angeles for All My Children?

Nixon: It’s three times as big as what we had in New York, which is so exciting. The sets are left up now. It’s just amazing. They’re more beautiful. The problem in New York was they had to be trucked back and forth every day.

EW.com: When you heard ABC wanted to move the show out here, did you have any initial concerns?

Nixon: Naturally, it was something new and I wondered. I was sad because it meant the crews wouldn’t be coming. And as I said, we’re a family. They’ve been, some of them, with us almost 40 years. For example, once I was getting ready to pay for my lunch (in the workplace cafeteria) and a voice behind me said, “You’re not paying for this lunch.” I turned around and saw a man, who said, “You helped me put my four kids through college. I’m buying this lunch.” That’s heartwarming. Those people didn’t get to come here.

EW.com: Were you worried about Susan Lucci because her family is on the east coast?

Nixon: She’s working here one week and doing I don’t know how many shows. They’re doing it movie style now, of course, which they have been for some time. I think Susan’s very satisfied. She’s staying here for one week and going home for two.

Cameron Mathison’s Mel Gibson interview!

SUDSIEST QUOTES OF THE WEEK:
“They’re both really good people to work with, which I think will fit in the team that we have put in place as a transition. I’m very, very pleased.”
—AMC EP Julie Hanan Carruthers in Soap Opera Digest regarding the appointments of co-head writers David Kreizman and Donna Swajeski
Translation: Who cares about talent — as long as they’re easy to get along with!

CRUISING THE SOAPERS
This just in: Cruise “host” Cameron Mathison, Jacob Young, Jeff Branson and James Scott could not make the watery adventure. Mathison and Young were held up because of their taping schedules, while Branson landed a gig on House.

All My Children, ABC, A — Sparkling crap!
• James Mitchell’s longtime partner, accomplished and revered costume designer, Albert Wolsky, sports quite the impressive resumĂ©. Despite his age, the two-time Oscar winner recently outfitted the cast of Revolutionary Road and Across The Universe. Along with adorning Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice, Wolsky won his Oscars for Bugsy (hello, Madonna) and All That Jazz! Nice to see that age isn’t important in the film world — just talent. Suds offers our deepest condolences to Wolsky and Mitchell’s family.

Meanwhile, in other Mitchell news, according to Soap Opera Digest, “AMC is gearing up for a moving tribute to [the recently deceased actor and his character, Palmer] but a source says the memorial won’t air until the spring. The show wants to wait until newly anointed head writers Donna Swajeski and David Kreizman have started, and can do the actor and character justice.” That’s a joke, right? Justice? Does show-killer Kreizman even know who Palmer is? I can’t wait to see this … Let interim head writer Lorraine Broderick pen the tribute, or Agnes Nixon. You know — someone with talent. Knowing Kreizman, he’ll have Madison give the eulogy!

• Cameron Mathison is invading my territory — and I don’t like it one bit! No, seriously, I’m oh-so proud of Mathison’s Good Morning America interview with Mel Gibson earlier this week. The Canadian hunk had the balls to ask Gibson — who had the audacity to compare himself to Tiger Woods, whom the last time I checked didn’t scream out racist and sexist epithets — about his drunk-driving scandal a few years back. In fact, the profile was so revealing that Mathison’s interview was even plugged and discussed on various cable news shows! Good work, Cam!

• It’s not even February yet and a handful of my fearless predictions have come true! WTF? As previously stated, my intention in writing this annual feature is to never be right! I guess I have to try harder next year to be more fearless! In my 2010 predictions, I joked that California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would join the show as a love interest for Erica Kane. Well, it’s not the Terminator, but it’s close. L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and L.A. City Council president Eric Garcetti will make an appearance on Feb. 17 and 16, respectively, opposite La Kane.

• The last of AMC’s New York-shot material will last air on Feb. 1. Make sure to tune in the next day to see the refurbished, HD-shot Pine Valley. “Everything is sparkling,” reports Julie Hanan Carruthers. Hopefully, the scripts will be, too.

OMG you gotta love Google, I just did a search for Susan Lucci news and came across an article on Lance Armstrong. Did you know Lance was almost Erica? check out this little bit of a write up that Lance Armstrong's mother did with Kentucky state Journal...
"But she got pregnant instead, and married the baby’s father – a “troublemaker with a gleam in his eye.” She thought her baby would be a girl, and planned to name her Erica after Susan Lucci’s character Erica Kane on “All My Children.”

She gave birth to a 10-pound boy instead."

Eva LaRue in Real life Soap Opera.

Eva La Rue (AMC's Ex- Maria) has found herself in a real-life soap opera of sorts at City Hall, where her fight to keep a recently built gate has sparked impassioned accusations among City Council members and focused political heat on the city’s review process.

The controversy centers on a wood gate La Rue constructed in 2007 without permits at the front of her Cordova Avenue home in North Glendale, which she said she built to guard her and her daughter from an alleged stalker.

“I am asking please, please to keep my gate,” La Rue told the City Council last week. “I’m a single mom. I know that this gate can’t really protect me from somebody that wants to do me and my 8-year-old harm, but at least it is some sort of barrier.”

But city officials have said they are disallowed from considering public safety elements in reviewing land-use disputes, a restriction that has played a part in the ensuing drama at City Hall.

Vincent Irizarry (AMC's David)
"I'm saddened and sorry to say goodbye to a dear soul, Mr. James Mitchell ... AMC has lost one of its most precious children, indeed. The man was a true gentleman and wonderful talent. I feel honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to work beside him and to be his friend. Light up the heavens as you did the world you walked upon these many years, beautiful man!"

Denise Vasi (AMC's Randi)
"Sorry to hear about James Mitchell. He was a great actor and will be missed dearly."

Susan Lucci (AMC's Erica)
"I have so many wonderful memories of James, it's hard to just tell one. There was this one day, we were both on set, waiting to do our scene. There was some kind of delay and so he came up to me, put his arms around me and we started to dance, right there on set. It was such a special moment. I kept thinking, 'Oh, my goodness. I am actually dancing with Jimmy Mitchell"

JR Martinez (AMC's Brot)
"We've lost an amazing man/actor. Will be missed!"

Debbi Morgan (AMC's Angie)
"He was such a special person. He lit up the room with his warmth, thoughtfulness and charm. He was truly authentic. James Mitchell was not only an icon, but a deeply sensitive and caring man. He was the utmost professional and it was amazing to watch him work and observe the life he breathed into the shrewd and irrepressible Palmer Cortlandt. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to be in his presence for so many years"

Darnell Williams (AMC's Jesse)
"Jimmy was a very kind, supportive man. He was gifted with a generosity toward his acting partner that most of us can only dream of. He'll be sorely missed by us all."

Kelly Ripa (AMC's Ex- Hayley)
"RIP James Mitchell. Palmer Cortlandt will live forever in my heart."

Eden Riegel (AMC's Ex- Bianca)
"So sad to hear of the passing of James Mitchell, Palmer on AMC. A great actor and a beautiful man. I am so lucky to have know him. "

"Our Prattville" Magazine Tribute to the late James Mitchell.

James Mitchell, known to millions as the controlling, cantankerous, powerful businessman, Palmer Cortlandt on the daytime drama All My Children, died on Friday from chronic destructive pulmonary disease complicated by pneumonia, ABC disclosed. Being a leap year baby, he would have turned 90 this year on March 1.

Mitchell, who began on All My Children in 1979, had not been a major character since 2002, and was only seen sporadically on the soap until 2008. His last appearance came when he appeared on the show’s 40th anniversary episode on January 5, 2010. During his tenure on the soap Mitchell earned seven Emmy nominations, and he quietly retired from television in 2009.

Our Prattville recently spoke with Taylor Miller who played Mitchell’s daughter, Nina, from 1979 until 1984 and from 1986-1989. She described her television father’s character as “such an evil man … with just that little twist of humor in there. He was just so perfect.”

Mourning ‘AMC’s James Mitchell!

WEEKEND SUDS FLASHES
Mourning James Mitchell! SAG honours White! Moss a big hit in Italy! Day Emmys in June!

Seven-time Daytime Emmy-nominated legend James Mitchell, a widely respected and talented stage actor (Billion Dollar Baby, Brigadoon, Bloomer Girl, The King and I, The Three Penny Opera), as well as films (The Turning Point, The Band Wagon, Oklahoma, Deep In My Heart), sadly passed away this past Friday at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to pneumonia at the age of 89. Born in Sacramento, Calif., the All My Children legend would have turned 90 on Feb. 29. Mitchell is survived by his longtime partner Albert Wolsky.

Ever the versatile artist, Mitchell spent his early days fluidly dancing for the likes of The American Ballet Theatre and The Agnes de Mille Dance Theatre.

In 1956, Mitchell began a new chapter in his venerable career when he signed on to star on daytime soap The Edge of Night. In 1969, the California native soap-hopped over to Where The Heart Is before assuming his popular role to date as Palmer Cortlandt on AMC in 1979.

Of course, Mitchell will be most remembered for his highly entertaining and lauded role as the ruthless yet lovable self-made tycoon, Palmer Cortlandt on AMC, which he originated in 1979. He last appeared on AMC earlier this month for one episode to celebrate the sudser’s 40th anniversary.

According to Wolsky, a memorial is still pending.

Soapgeist reader Derek Kitchen shares one of his favourite AMC scenes featuring Mr. Mitchell in which Palmer chastises his wife at the time, Donna, for her latest “makeover.”
